>RJ at GeekFest Beirut

On July 5, GeekFest Beirut took place at The Alleway in Gemmayzeh and our
creative director Maya Metni did a small presentation about the GeekChic fashion trend:

Basically she explained that at the end of the eighties and the start of the nineties,
supermodels became the new rockstars and inspired generations...
They also made it possible for designers to shine. So Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford
and John Galliano decided they are so popular they could be in their own
ad campaigns instead of their models!

Karl Lagerfeld however, waited for the GeekChic trend to come because he knew
it was going to be huge! He is now a big time geek and his brand Karl for example
only sells online!
He was 100% right because geeks are now kicking ass! Pete Cashmore from mashable
is now modelling for GQ's fashion editorials and Steve Jobs black turtlenecks went out
of stock the week he passed away... Geek streetstyle and fashion bloggers are front row
on the catwalks near big fashion gurus!
Watch the video for some inspirational geeks and the RJ #HowTo guide...

There was also the Geeky fashion show, in which RECTANGLE JAUNE participated...

Looking forward to the next GeekFest Beirut!

Geek is the new Rockstar!!

Haven't you heard? The coolest kids on the block are Geeks!
Pete Cashmore (Mashable), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Kevin Rose (Digg), Biz Stone (Twitter)... When Steve Jobs died, St. Croix turtlenecks sales increased almost by 100%!
Nerdy hipster is no longer out of fashion...
Geeks are coming back with their vintage style and their heavy plastic black-rimmed glasses, the traditional trademark of geek culture. Many celebrities are embracing geek style: Johnny Depp (for years now), Justin Timberlake, Alicia keys, the fresh and upcoming blogger Louise Ebel... It is cool to be geek.

How to dress Geek Chic
  • Wear the right T-shirt. Any color, preferably featuring a print relevant to geek/nerd culture.
  • Wear the right sweater and the right vest: Check above for RJ inspiration.
  • Converse trainers are a key choice. There are lots of colour options and they go with casual and smart clothes. Loafers and derbies are ok too, providing you get the right pair: Check the Hampton Collection at all RJ shops.
  • Your hair has to be messy as if you were in front of the computer the whole day with no time to check the mirror.
  • Forget style rules. If it works, whatever the colors and patterns, then it's all good.
  • When buying your  glasses, make sure they suit your face.
  • Think retro. Look at vintage pictures of film stars and adapt their style to look contemporary.
  • Avoid overdoing things. Most people often try to overdo dressing by wearing way too many accessories and clothes. Keep it simple.
  • Own your identity!

>Style tips: 5 suit rules

1 Sleeves and pants. Your sleeves should be right over your round wrist bone, about 1.25 cm above your shirt cuff. The pants legs should have a single medium break in the front and the back part should fall where the top of the heel meets the leather of your shoe.

2 Armholes. If the armholes are a bit high and tight, they can be tailored to get you more room. But if the bottom of the arm opening is low and baggy, you should choose another size or cut.

3 Rollout. Most of suits are cut with a slightly sloped shoulder. That is why men with broader shoulders get an unattractive fabric roll that gathers where the collar and body meet. It should be removed by your tailor.

4 Middle part. When your jacket is buttoned, tug it away from your body: your should have about 5 cm of room. More than that would make you look like a box, and we are aiming for a defined waist.

5 "2.5 cm of magic". While you're standing with your arms on the side, curl your fingers to touch the bottom edge of your jacket: it should fall right between your first and second knuckle. If you want your suit to have a modern look, take out another 2.5 cm, but anything more than that would ruin your suit's proportions.
