Celebrating The Oxford Shirt

This month we are celebrating the Oxford shirt at RECTANGLE JAUNE

Oxford shirts get their name from the cloth they are cut from- Oxford cloth. Rumour has it that a Scottish mill constructed four new fabric weaves around the late 1800s and named them after four prestigious Universities: Harvard, Yale, Cambridge and, of course, Oxford.

Oxford shirts are a preppy icon. The open weave means that the shirt is breathable, making them wearable in the summer months and they look great layered under a smart knit for colder days, making them a year-round wardrobe staple.

Oxford cloth is traditionally woven using a basket weave technique. Often the Oxford weave will use two slightly different but tonal yarns. This gives the fabric a distinctive pattern and a subtle marl effect to the garment.

Oxford shirts were originally considered very formal and would be worn with a jacket and tie or the shirt would be tucked into the trousers. This was how the shirt was worn when it was considered a staple part of Polo playing attire pre 1930s. The fact that Oxford shirts were worn for playing polo gave them a whole new identity, the Oxford shirt was seen in both a formal and casual manner. As a result, during the 1950s and 60s the Oxford shirt was really embraced by the Preppy Ivy League students who could be seen sporting an Oxford, un-tucked, with shorts and loafers. The shirt took on a sporty persona and was notorious for treading the line between smart and ‘off-duty’. Nowadays an Oxford shirt with a button down collar is considered more sporty.

The oxford shirt has long been an essential part of the RJ man’s wardrobe.
Incredibly versatile, it is appropriate in many settings.

Been a long drive to the mountains this morning. I just regret getting in the car in the first place.  Looks like everyone and their kids are heading to the slopes today. Like a grumpy cat, I park and take my skis from the trunk, then head to the terrace for a quick coffee fix.  A quick look across from me and I see HIM through the cover of Pale Fire by Nabokov. 

OMG! Who is this man? Who gave him that? Is that a gift from a wife or girlfriend? Is he in a book club? And then I forget the jam packed roads and I start to fantasize about this stranger. What genres he’s into and what books did he read. I want to know him in the literary sense. I like a man with brain. A man who knows how to use it. Is the snow melting already or is it just me? Stranger with a book... take me away. 

There are plenty of attractive men in the world, but unfortunately few of them are avid readers. I personally find it super sexy when a man picks up a book and reads. Truth is, no matter what the media tells us, people find intelligence attractive in a mate. We want someone who can keep up with us and get our jokes, who can understand the secret parts of ourselves yet also stimulate us and help us discover new things. We like the guy who can pass us a book we’ve never read before, and not be so set in his business books that he can’t pick up Bukowski or Joyce Carol Oates sometime. I saw a man reading Fountainhead on the plane the other day, and I nearly died. I wanted to have my picture taken next to him and the sexy book, and flaunt it on facebook, twitter, instagram and pinterest. 

Sure men’s taste in music says a lot about them, but an easier way to judge how open a guy’s mind is to look at his book collection and see what he is putting in that brain of his. Inspecting a guy’s reading list offers us a glimpse into his psyche. Is he into fiction? Is he only interested in obscure books that you’ve never heard of? Does he only pick bestsellers from the local bookstore? Or rely on some bookworm’s recommendations? Reading allows us to see what’s under the surface of someone and realize that this hot guy might be more than what he seems. 

In a society where we become jaded as we come to believe everyone is the same, books offer the promise of something different, another world opening up to us. 

Let me put it in plain language: reading increases knowledge. Knowledge is power. Power is sexy. Voilà!

RJMAG 9 Is Out!

On July 5, GeekFest Beirut took place at The Alleway in Gemmayzeh and our
creative director Maya Metni did a small presentation about the GeekChic fashion trend:

Basically she explained that at the end of the eighties and the start of the nineties,
supermodels became the new rockstars and inspired generations...
They also made it possible for designers to shine. So Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford
and John Galliano decided they are so popular they could be in their own
ad campaigns instead of their models!

Karl Lagerfeld however, waited for the GeekChic trend to come because he knew
it was going to be huge! He is now a big time geek and his brand Karl for example
only sells online!

He was 100% right because geeks are now kicking ass! Pete Cashmore from mashable
is now modelling for GQ's fashion editorials and Steve Jobs black turtlenecks went out
of stock the week he passed away... Geek streetstyle and fashion bloggers are front row
on the catwalks near big fashion gurus!
